Dec 27, 2017 2:26 pm
Matthew Hamilton reports in Capitol Confidential that Joel Giambra, a former Erie County Executive, is the latest possible Republican candidate for governor. In a Dec. 26 interview, Giambra spoke about supporting campaign finance reform, marijuana legalization, and his past support of Democrats. "I'm willing to raise those issues that heretofore elected officials who want to make a career in politics are apprehensive about raising," said Giambra, who added he has no intention of serving as governor for more than four years. "Am I going to ruffle some feathers? I suspect I will. I've done that my whole career. But I'm going to try to do what I think is right. I have absolutely nothing to lose." So far Assembly Minority Leader Brian Kolb has announced he is running in the Republican primary, and businessman Harry Wilson, state Sen. John DeFrancisco of Syracuse, and Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro are considering the election. Democrat Andrew Cuomo is expected to attempt a third term as governor in 2018.
