New law requires cars to switch lanes for disabled vehicles

Oct 02, 2023 12:19 pm

Luke Parsnow reports at New York State of Politics that New York drivers must now switch lanes when there is a disabled vehicle pulled over. Gov. Kathy Hochul signed the law on Oct. 2 that, "requires an operator of a motor vehicle to exercise due care to avoid colliding with a vehicle which is parked, stopped, or standing on the shoulder of a parkway or controlled-access highway" by changing lanes. Since 2010 New York law mandates cars move over lanes for emergency vehicles. Hochul said 37 people were struck and killed outside of a disabled vehicle in New York between 2016 and 2020.
