NY AG files suit against Trump Foundation

Jun 14, 2018 1:45 pm
Darren Samuelsohn reports at Politico that the new New York Attorney General, Barbara Underwood, filed a lawsuit against President Donald Trump and three of his children June 14 about the actions of his personal charity. “As our investigation reveals, the Trump Foundation was little more than a checkbook for payments from Mr. Trump or his businesses to nonprofits, regardless of their purpose or legality,” Underwood said in a prepared statement. “This is not how private foundations should function and my office intends to hold the Foundation and its directors accountable for its misuse of charitable assets.” The lawsuit before the New York Supreme Court alleges unlawful political coordination with the Trump 2016 presidential campaign and self-dealing transactions to benefit Trump’s personal and business interests. The AG asks the court to dissolve Trump’s charity, the Donald J. Trump Foundation, and wants $2.8 million in restitution and other penalties. Trump responded with a tweet: "The sleazy New York Democrats, and their now disgraced (and run out of town) A.G. Eric Schneiderman, are doing everything they can to sue me on a foundation that took in $18,800,000 and gave out to charity more money than it took in, $19,200,000. I won’t settle this case!"
