Committee tables C-GCC mental health clinic request

Richard Moody is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media a request from Columbia-Greene Community College to establish a mental health clinic on campus met some resistance from the Board of Supervisors Health and Human Services Committee last week. The request to run a satellite mental health center four hours a week on the Greenport campus was presented by county Mental Health Director Michael Cole. College vice president Joseph Watson said the school currently sends students with mental health needs to places off-campus. He said access to these types of services would help with student retention and success. The department has also presented similar requests on behalf of county school districts in the past. Kinderhook Town Supervisor Patrick Grattan said the county should prioritize services at grade schools before putting a clinic at the college. Similar concerns were expressed by other members of the committee and the request was subsequently tabled. Greene County Administrator Shaun Groden said this week he had not spoken with college or Columbia County officials about the proposed satellite clinic.
