Columbia County farms get grants

Richard Moody reports for Columbia-Greene Media that some of the $1 million that the state Department of Agriculture and Markets and Empire State Development Corp. is spreading out to early-stage farmers has headed to Columbia County. Sather Duke and his wife, Ruby, got $50,000 in New Farmers Grant Fund money for their Raven and Boar in East Chatham. "We built an on-farm processing kitchen,” Sather Duke said. “That way, we can get better products from our sausage and charcuterie. We can fully utilize the pigs and make everything the way we want, and keep most of the funds here in the business.” Other local farms that have received similar funding include the Sparrowbush Farm in Hudson; the MX Morningstar Farm in Copake; the Letterbox Farm in Hudson; the Blue Star Farm in Stuyvesant; and the Ironwood Farm in Hudson.
