Sarah Trafton is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media the Cairo Republican Committee held its caucus, Thu., Mar. 18, to select candidates for town supervisor and two open seats on the town board. The caucus chose Jason Watts as its candidate for town supervisor and Mike Flaherty and Marion Coyne for town board. Incumbent town board member Mary-Jo Cords and Debra BirkBogins placed third and fourth in the voting, respectively. Coyne bested Cord by just seven votes. Cord is now in conversation with committee member Peter Maassmann, asking for a recount. Cord said, “Several people told me that they heard people say they voted for the same person twice, so I think they need to review the ballots and figure that out.” Incumbent town board member Watts received the GOP nod over attorney Monica Kenny-Keff. The two sparred on social media in the days leading up to the vote, with Kenny-Keff raising questions about Watts' ethics. Town Supervisor John Coyne is running for the Cairo seats on the Greene County Legislature vacated by long-time lawmaker William Lawrence. Lawrence has announced his retirement and will not be running for reelection. Read the full story at HudsonValley360 [dot] com.
