Two more water main breaks in Catskill

Feb 12, 2019 1:00 pm
Sarah Trafton is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media the village of Catskill was hit with two more water main breaks early Feb. 11. The first break occurred around 3 a.m. on Abeel Drive near Community Life Church. Village crews had the break repaired by 5:30 a.m., but by mid-morning, they were called back to repair a second break on West Bridge Street near the former Agway. The village does not expect to issue a boil water advisory, Village President Vincent Seeley said. The village suffered two other water main breaks in January. To address the problem, officials have plans to rehabilitate the system. Water main breaks are not unheard of this time of year, Department of Public Works Superintendent Michael McGrath said. “It’s pretty typical,” he said. “This year we had deep frost, and then it was warm and cold again. Especially with an older system it’s almost unavoidable.” The village's water main system is 120 years old, McGrath said. Seeley said in the village's 2019 capital proposal calls for the replacement of some of the oldest water lines. “We have 30-plus miles of line,” he said. “If they’re supposed to last 30 to 40 years, we should be replacing a mile every year. We’re still playing catch-up from years past.” Read the full story at HudsonValley360 [dot] com.
