Cuomo moves to ban police from having sex with suspects in custody

The Associated Press reports Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Feb. 14 he’ll amend his state budget proposal to make it illegal for police officers to have sex with people in their custody. Current law bars sex between correctional officers and inmates, but there is no law about police. Last year, two New York City police detectives were accused of handcuffing and then sexually assaulting an 18-year-old woman in Brooklyn who was stopped on suspicion of drug possession. “There must be zero tolerance for sexual abuse and harassment across the board, and especially among those in positions of authority,” Cuomo said in a statement. “This common sense reform closes an egregious loophole and helps protect against abuse in our justice system.” Read the full story at the Associated Press website.
