Kristen Brown reported in the Times Union thousands of opponents of New York's SAFE legislation descended on the state Capitol, Sat., Jan. 19. The newly enacted law tightened the state's restrictions on assault-style weapons and ammunition. Protesters stood in the bitter cold beginning at noon, chanting "We the People" and "Freedom." The demonstration took place in conjunction with similar rallies across the country organized by Guns Across America. "Government never moves this fast except when they are taking your rights,” Assemblyman Steve McLaughlin told the crowd. Read the full story in the Times Union.
Ariel Zangla reported in the Daily Freeman for the third consecutive year, Greene County received more sales tax revenue than anticipated. As of Jan. 14, the county received $27 million for the 2012 fiscal year, more than $1.5 million than expected. County Treasurer Peter Markou said he does not know the source of the increase. Nathan Mayberg reported in the Register Star Columbia County recently received a final 2012 sales tax payment from the state of nearly $2 million. County Treasurer P.J. Keeler said the check represented a 30 percent increase over the same payment last year.
Kyle Adams reports in The Daily Mail approximately 50 people gathered at the Red Rooster Roadhouse in Cairo, Sun., Jan. 20, for the first of a series of community conversations around the reconfiguration of the Cairo and Durham elementary schools. The Cairo-Durham Board of Education has yet to finalize the details of the reconfiguration. It announced last week the formation of a committee, open to community members, to fully explore the plan, and the impact of implementation. Much of the discussion at the Red Rooster Sunday, revolved around transportation and the challenges the plan presents to parents with children in both schools, located 13 miles apart.
