Fate of Athens Street Festival in question
Feb 10, 2015 6:57 am
Melanie Lekocevic is reporting in The Daily Mail after 40 years, the fate of the Athens Street Festival is in doubt. With key leadership positions now vacant no one is prepared to organize and run the July 2015 event. In addition to the loss of key volunteers, the festival is also facing financial challenges. Revenue has been lost from two important sources, most notably the Athens Community Foundation, which cut its support for the fireworks show by more than half. Also, the town of Athens is no longer offering financial assistance. It will not contribute any funds to support the 2015 event. At a meeting Sat., Feb. 7, village mayor Chris Pfister floated the idea of changing the scope and focus of the festival. The committee is now seeking an overall manager for the event, as well as a treasurer. Anyone interested in helping are encouraged to contact village officials. Read the full story in The Daily Mail.
