Proposition would reduce size of Chatham BoE

May 12, 2020 1:00 pm
Voters in the Chatham Central School District will decide June 9, if their Board of Education will be reduced from nine members to seven. The volunteer board is currently made-up of nine individuals who were each elected to three-year terms. Under Proposition II, the membership would be decreased to seven members, beginning with the 2021-22 school year. Under the plan, next year one member would be elected to a three-year term; the following year, three members would be elected, two for three-year terms, one for two years. Then in 2023-24 three members would be elected, each for three-year terms. This year — for the 2020-21 school year — three seats are open, including the seat currentlyheld by board president, Rachel Galvin. Development of the district's 2020-2021 spending plan is currently underway. The board will hold a budget hearing May 26 and budget materials will then be available the day following by request. The June 9 school board election and annual budget vote will be conducted by absentee ballots. Read the full public notice in The Columbia Paper.
