Hudson Common Council drops bid for lawyer

Feb 19, 2015 6:50 am
John Mason is reporting in the Register Star the Hudson Common Council will not have the right to pick its own attorney, at least for now. At a meeting of the full Council Tue., Feb. 17, a resolution to override Mayor William H. Hallenbeck Jr.'s January veto of a council resolution to fund the position was taken off the aldermen's desks. In January the council authorized the city treasurer to allocate $15,000 for a Common Council legal advisor. Three days later, the mayor vetoed the resolution. On Feb. 10, steps were taken to begin the process to override the veto. On Tuesday, Council President Don Moore, a proponent of the override, tried to postpone the vote, but city attorney Carl Whitbeck Jr. said the law was clear -- if the vote was not taken that night the veto would stand. Calling the matter a significant issue, Moore vowed to resurrect the proposal, saying a new resolution would eventually be put forward again. Read the full story in the Register Star.
