Human rights advocate calls for community to condemn Nazi flag in Poughkeepsie

Apr 13, 2021 5:45 am

MidHudson News is reporting a Nazi flag hanging in an apartment window in the town of Poughkeepsie is inappropriate and should be removed, said Karen Hochhauser, executive director of the Dutchess County Jewish Federation. The flag has been displayed in that window off and on for the last few years, despite the landlord telling the renters to take it down. Hochhauser said the entire community must speak out against hatred. “It is important that the public, the community, the business community, the elected officials, all be very verbal and very vocal about that this is not acceptable, and together we are stronger, and we will not allow any type of hatred in our home,” she said. Jody Miller, executive director of the Dutchess County Human Rights Commission, said, anti-Semitism has grown across the nation and the Nazi flag in Poughkeepsie has no place anywhere in the community. “It really represents the vilest of hate, it represents an attack on the Jewish community, it represents hate against people, and I think there are many, many people who are upset about it,” she said. Miller said the human rights commissions in Dutchess, Ulster, and Orange counties are working toward collaborating on a speakers series about hate. Read the full story at MidHudsonNews [dot] com.
