Cairo Town Board resolves to protect prehistoric forest

Sarah Trafton is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media Cairo town officials adopted a resolution March 2, establishing their intent to protect the prehistoric forest located behind the highway garage. The resolution approved this week read, in part, “The Town of Cairo will work collaboratively with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Greene and Columbia counties to protect, preserve and promote this unique and valuable natural resource, by developing and encouraging educational opportunities, examining our ancient past and predicting future environmental changes while welcoming visitors to our area to appreciate this site.” Town Supervisor John Coyne said the town has been at work on a proposal, in collaboration with Assemblymember Chris Tague and state Sen. George Amedore Jr., that includes a plan to construct a fence to protect the two-acre site. Both Tague and Amedore have introduced legislation in Albany on behalf of the historic forest. A research team from Binghamton University was sifting through fossil soils at a quarry behind the Cairo Highway Department last year and uncovered evidence of the 385-million-year-old forest, dating back to the Devonian age.
