Some local representatives are pro-gun, others want some controls

Feb 21, 2018 2:15 pm
City and State reports about the public stances on guns of local elected officials. Rensselaer County Executive Steve McLaughlin is the most pro-gun local official, voting against the SAFE Act in 2013, and comparing Gov. Andrew Cuomo to Hitler and Mussolini for rushing the gun control bill through the legislature and signing it hours after it was passed. McLaughlin was endorsed by the New York State Rifle and Pistol Association, the state affiliate of the National Rifle Association. Rep. John Faso (R-Kinderhook) received $5,950 in 2016 from the National Rifle Association. On December 6, Faso voted for the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, which takes away the right of individual states such as New York to determine what qualifications a person must meet before being allowed to carry a concealed firearm in its borders. Instead, the state with the least regulation makes policy for all other states, since its concealed carry rules would be law everywhere. The International Association of Chiefs of Police, the Major Cities Chiefs Association, and the Association of Prosecuting Attorneys opposed the bill. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, who used to live near Hudson when she represented the area in the U.S. House, got an “A” rating from the NRA until she got to the Senate, and now she has an “F” rating. Likewise, Senator Chuck Schumer has an "F" rating from the NRA. Read the full story in City and State.
