Coxsackie, facing lawsuit, redoes solar law

Jun 17, 2019 12:54 am
Sarah Trafton reports for Columbia-Greene Media that Coxsackie town officials moving again to approve a very restrictive town law that bars development of most solar energy farms. The reason: they made some mistakes the first time, and are fixing them now. “We needed to do a more thorough state Environmental Quality Review," Town Supervisor Richard Hanse said. At the same time, Coxsackie faces a lawsuit from a group that calls themselves Friends of Flint Mine Solar, 25 town residents who think the town law is illegal. The two sides have until June 28 to work out an agreement, or the case goes to court. Giuseppina Agovino, one of the residents suing the town, is hopeful that the two sides can reach an agreement. “Everyone in the community is trying to get on,” Agovino said. “We’re trying to find the best way to have solar and protect our community at the same time. That’s what we’d like the town to understand. If we could find a suitable compromise to help everybody, that would be the best approach.” Meanwhile, the town board waits for the Greene County Planning Board's take on the new law, before voting again.
