Town of Catskill Attorney says town can't always press broadcast button

May 20, 2019 12:45 am
Sarah Trafton reports for Columbia-Greene Media that Catskill Town Attorney Michael Smith claims in a letter defending the town against an accusation of violating the open meetings law that Catskill can only provide a live webstreams of certain types of meetings. “In fact, streaming of Town Board meetings is only routinely available for regularly scheduled meetings not emergency meetings and streaming is not part of the zoning board’s procedure at any meetings.” Actually, the Town of Catskill and its Zoning Board, have easy access to many different ways to stream local meetings. Currently, WGXC works with the Town of Catskill with a live webstream and archived recordings available at wgxc.org. Nothing is stopping the Town of Catskill from streaming emergency meetings, or Zoning Board meetings, or any other kind of meetings. The Town of Catskill could, like many other towns, provide a webstream of their meetings through Facebook Live, or Periscope, or many other streaming services. The Town of Schodack webstreams its meetings, as does the Albany County Legislature. WGXC, with volunteer Dan Udell, streams Hudson Common Council meetings, and meetings of the Columbia County Board of Supervisors. These towns could certainly provide their own live webstreams of their own meetings, as the technology is now cheap, readily available, and easy to use.
