NY delays opening of state-operated campgrounds

May 08, 2020 12:30 pm
Rick Karlin is reporting for the Times Union the start of camping season at state-operated facilities has been delayed until at least June 1, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For those planning to spend Memorial Day weekend in a campground it means a change of plans, and the delay will deliver a further blow to the tourism industry upstate. The state Department of Environmental Conservation issued a statement May 7 stating, “All visitors with reservations will be issued a full refund. For those with cottage reservations, there is a possibility the stay restriction will be lifted prior to June 1. New York State has suspended all new camping, cabin, and cottage reservations for the 2020 season until further notice.” Privately owned campgrounds or RV parks are opening in some counties, mostly for seasonal guests, but not in others. Outdoor spots across the Northeast are also being temporarily closed including areas of New Hampshire’s popular Presidential Range that are controlled by the U.S. Forest Service.
