David Clegg running for Ulster DA

Jan 28, 2019 12:30 pm
MidHudsonNews [dot] com is reporting Democrat David Clegg has declared his candidacy for Ulster County District Attorney. The former congressional candidate announced he would challenge incumbent Holley Carnright in November, during a kickoff rally on the steps of the county courthouse, Jan. 26. Clegg was joined by state Assembly member Kevin Cahill, County Executive Michael Hein, and other officials. Promising a continued crackdown on violent criminal offenders, Clegg vowed to keep the community safe from physical harm. “I will make sure they are prosecuted, convicted and punished,” he said. “I was a victim of violent crime myself; I was robbed, stabbed, and almost killed, when I was a high school student. I know what it is to suffer the trauma and pain of being a victim.” Clegg was one of seven candidates in the 2018 Democratic Congressional primary, losing to Antonio Delgado. In his announcement, Clegg noted that Ulster County has elected a succession of Republican district attorneys for the past 169 years. “I do believe it’s time for a change; it’s time to bring our criminal justice system here in Ulster County into the 21st Century,” he said. GOP incumbent Carnright was first elected in 2008, and ran unopposed in 2016. Clegg will run on a campaign platform of restorative justice, compassionate drug policy, and school-to-prison pipeline reform. He has 40 years experience as a criminal lawyer and public defender.
