State scores well for working mothers

May 07, 2018 2:45 pm

New York is 10th best state in the country for working mothers, according to the personal-finance website WalletHub. The site released its annual report, the Best and Worst States for Working Moms, May 7. The site compared the attractiveness of each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia for working mothers based on 15 key metrics. New York scored at both ends of the spectrum. While the state ranked first in the country for day-care quality, it scored among the top five worst states for the cost of child care. The state came in third for its parental leave policy, and ranked within the top 10 for its gender pay gap and its work-life balance. Nationally, Vermont scored first overall, followed by Minnesota, Massachusetts, the District of Columbia and Connecticut. The worst states for working mothers were (in order), Idaho, Louisiana, Alabama, Nevada and South Carolina. WalletHub found that states that voted Democratic in the 2016 election were more friendly to working mothers than states that voted Republican. Read the full report at wallethub.com.
