Sarah Trafton Columbia-Greene Media reports that while the winter snow storm may have underperformed expectations, the following bitter cold front has lived up to its billing. “With the wind chill, the temperature will be -35 in the mountains and -20 in the valley,” said meteorologist Ray O’Keefe from the National Weather Service in Albany. “It is life threatening. Your skin can freeze in 10 minutes if it is -35 to -40 out.” Over six to 10 inches of snow fell in Greene and Columbia counties before the bitter cold arrived in the afternoon on Jan. 20. Governor Andrew Cuomo lifted his ban tractor trailers and buses on the entire New York State Thruway system, that lasted from Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning. SUNY New Paltz in Ulster County announced they are closed Jan. 21 and 22, due to icy conditions on campus and the forecast of bitterly cold temperatures today through Jan. 21, all classes on Tue., Jan. 22, are cancelled.
