Apr 28, 2011 3:22 pm
Andrew Amelinckx reports in the Register-Star that the massive weather system that has caused havoc from the South to the Northeast U.S. this week took its toll in Stuyvesant today, Apr. 28, when a church was struck by lightning and caught fire this morning before 9 a.m. "Firefighters responded to the Stuyvesant Reformed Church, located at the intersection of Route 9J and Church Street, and were able to quickly extinguish the fire," he reports. The church also includes a food pantry that serves families in the local community. Stuyvesant Fire Chief Steve Montie told Amelinckx that, “the damage was limited to about a four by four (foot) area on the outside of the church,” on the Church Street side of the early-1800s era building.
