Immigration law clinic this weekend
Aug 24, 2018 8:00 am
Amanda Purcell is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media a free, one-day legal clinic will be held Sat., Aug. 25, for those seeking legal advice on immigration issues. Immigration attorney Joseph Best, of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, will provide free consultations by appointment at 431 Union St. for anyone in Columbia County with questions about their immigration status. The clinic is open to all immigrants in Columbia County regardless of legal status, Columbia County Sanctuary Movement Executive Director Bryan MacCormack said. The county Sanctuary group has served approximately 50 people at its clinics in just over a year; it averages about four clinics a year. “Our main goal is to keep families together,” MacCormack said. Changes to immigration policies have created uncertainty within the immigrant community, including the Trump Administration’s phase-out of temporary protected status, which is given to eligible nationals of designated countries who are present in the U.S., MacCormack said. Best regularly works with the Columbia County Sanctuary Movement at its clinics. “Immigration law is extraordinarily complicated,” Best said Thursday. “Most people seeking relief through some kind of immigration status should try to have an attorney help them.” Anyone interested in registering for the clinic are advised to call (518) 303-3848 or email sanctuarycolumbiacounty@gmail.com.
