The Times Union is reporting the number of anti-Semitic incidents in New York nearly doubled between 2016 and 2017, according to a new report from the Anti-Defamation League. Statewide it was the largest single-year increase since the league began tracking incidents in the 1970s. There were 380 reported incidents of anti-Semitism in New York in 2017, compared to 199 the year before. Those incidents included physical assaults, vandalism, harassment and attacks on Jewish institutions. Upstate there were 54 incidents of anti-Semitism reported last year, compared to 20 the previous year. New York has the world’s largest population of Jews outside of Israel with more than 1.7 million residents claiming Jewish heritage. “New Yorkers are seeing an undeniable surge of anti-Semitism and bigotry that we all must confront,” said Evan R. Bernstein, ADL New York Regional Director. “The dramatic increase in harassment, school related incidents and against religious institutions cannot be accepted as a ‘new normal'."
