Copake Town Board cancels summer camp, concert series, will keep park closed

Jun 21, 2020 6:00 am
Diane Valden is reporting for The Columbia Paper the Copake Town Board voted June 11, to cancel the town's summer program for children, not to hold its annual Music in the Park concert series, and to keep Copake Memorial Park closed for now. Copake Supervisor Jeanne Mettler said two months ago county Department of Health Director Jack Mabb, county Board of Supervisors Chairman Matt Murell and county Health and Human Services Committee Chairman Robert Lagonia issued a strong recommendation to keep summer day camps closed in Columbia County this year. Governor Andrew Cuomo later said they could open under strict guidelines, but the county has maintained its position that camps should remain closed. Mettler also consulted with her COVID-19 Task Force, consisting of a retired nurse, a retired pharmacis,t and a retired Sheriff’s deputy and former fire chief, who all agreed that the town should not open summer camp. Town board member Richard Wolf said though “I feel for the kids and their families,” he thinks the town should follow the county recommendation and not open. Board member Stosh Gansowski noted that some states have seen a rise in the number of COVID-19 cases. “We must be overly cautious, especially with children,” he said. The vote to cancel camp, keep the town park closed, and cancel the annual concert series was unanimous. Read the full story in The Columbia Paper.
