Local man recording Athens town and village meetings

Daniel Zuckerman writes for Columbia-Greene Media that an Athens has asked to videotape Athens village meetings, even though no permission is necessary. Local meetings are public, and the public may videotape, record audio, and webstream any public meeting. Larry Styles has previously videotaped Athens town meetings, and will now also record the village meetings. He then uploads clips to YouTube. Village Attorney Tal Rappleyea admits in the story that it is legal to record municipal meetings, according to open meeting laws. “I just feel like doing it,” Styles said. “I don’t want an award — I’m not looking out to make a big name for myself.” The board discussed the videotaping of meetings at a recent meeting, but not providing the public with a live webstream of every meeting, something that is simple to do with technology in 2018.
