Columbia environmental council hears about water maps

Jul 07, 2016 6:30 am

Emilia Teasdale is reporting in the Columbia Paper Columbia County's Environmental Management Council reviewed detailed maps of the groundwater resources in 10 county towns at the council's meeting this week. Steve Winkley, from the state’s Rural Water Association provided the maps, which show wells and groundwater sources for Ancram, Austerlitz, Chatham, Claverack, Copake, Germantown, Ghent, Hillsdale, Stuyvesant and Taghkanic. Winkley said the mapping project was paid for with a Hudson River Valley Greenway grant. He said the maps provide information on drinking water sources, and will hopefully be used to help towns protect those sources. “I’ve gotten a lot of interest after the whole PFOA thing,” Winkley told the council. PFOA, or perfluorooctanoic acid, a suspected carcinogen, has been found in water systems in neighboring Rensselaer County communities, among them, Hoosick Falls. Winkley said that he is hoping to hold a meeting at Columbia-Greene Community College for town officials and members of the council to discuss the mapping project. Nine county municipalities, including the city of Hudson, have not yet been mapped. Read the full story in the Columbia Paper.
