Activists step up efforts to shut down Dunn Landfill

Jun 16, 2021 5:43 am

Kenneth C. Crowe II reports in the Times Union that activists are stepping up their efforts to shut down the Dunn Landfill in Rensselaer. The Rensselaer Environmental Coalition is holding a rally outside Rensselaer City Hall at 5:45 p.m. June 16 urging the Common Council to pass a resolution asking the state Department of Environmental Conservation to revoke the SA Dunn Landfill’s operating permits. The landfill is next to the Rensselaer City School District Campus, with over 1,000 students, and has been the cause of many community complaints about truck traffic, dust, and odors. The landfill's current operating permit expires in July 2022. The DEC said in May it will conduct an “enhanced renewal process” for a new permit. “Last year, the East Greenbush Town Board unanimously passed a resolution calling on Governor Andrew Cuomo and the DEC to close the Dunn Landfill. REC is asking that the City of Rensselaer Common Council do the same,” the coalition said June 15. Read more about this story in the Times Union.
