Durham gets new Wi-Fi hotspot

Dec 17, 2020 1:45 pm
Andrea Macko is reporting for Porcupine Soup the Durham community has a new Wi-Fi hotspot. The Durham Connect Broadband Working Group, in conjunction with Mid-Hudson Cable, installed the service, which provides broadband speeds that supports multiple simultaneous users. Access is free and available from the Town Barn parking lot on Route 81 and Dean's Mill Road, across from Lounsbury Appliances. Rosemary O'Brien, Broadband Working Group convener, explained, “[To connect,][s]earch available networks and choose 'Mid-Hudson Cable student wifi,' then connect.” No password, network key or SSID is needed. Free Internet access is also available at the Durham Reading Room and outside from its parking lot next to the East Durham Post Office on Route 145. O'Brien said the group,“has undertaken a number of initiatives to help get a lot more broadband internet access infrastructure...in Durham.” Maps of internet access and mobile coverages will eventually be made available as well, she added. The Greene County Legislature is currently in discussion about hiring a consultant to determine what areas of the county lack internet access and where service can be improved. Durham representative Patricia Handel said if state funding to expand access is not available, the county will look for federal funds. Read the full story in Porcupine Soup.
