Bidding for Greene County Jail begins

Sarah Trafton reports for Columbia-Greene Media that Greene County legislators voted unanimously Jan. 7 to open bidding on construction of a new jail. Bids are due Feb. 20 for plumbing and gas fitting work; steam, hot water heating, ventilation and air conditioning work; and electrical wiring and illuminating fixtures work. There are no estimates of overall costs, or how much taxes will be raised to pay for the facility that currently is supposed to house 64 male beds and 16 female beds. The county sheriff and the state Commission of Corrections are both recommending building a bigger structure to hold more prisoners. The county is borrowing at least $39 million so far for the project. During construction, Greene County is leasing a temporary processing facility at 370 Mansion St. in Coxsackie for three years. The sheriff’s office now has satellites in Prattsville, Ashland, New Baltimore, and Greenville, and the new construction will add another in Coxsackie, with its civil office staying in Catskill.
