Valatie officials want bike riders off Main Street sidewalks

Emilia Teasdale is reporting for The Columbia Paper the Valatie Village Board is looking to pass a local law to regulate the use of bicycles, skateboards, rollerblades and other wheeled devices on Main Street. Village Attorney Rob Fitzsimmons advised the board at its August 13 meeting that no state law covers riding bikes on sidewalks, so a regulation of that type is left to individual municipalities. The board's consideration of a new law is a response to complaints from business owners. Under the proposed law use of wheeled devices would be prohibited on the sidewalk along Main Street between the intersection of New Street and Main Street and the intersection of Lake Street and Main Street. Anyone found to be in violation of the law would be fined $25 the first time, up to $50 the second, and no more than $100 for the third violation within one year. The board must hold a public hearing and approve the measure before it can take effect. “I think we should table it until next month when the business community can comment on it,” Mayor Diane Argyle said. The village board next meets on September 11. Read the full story in The Columbia Paper.
