Supervisors move Galvan agreement forward

Apr 19, 2018 8:00 am

Richard Moody is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media the Galvan Foundation and the Columbia County Board of Supervisors are close to an agreement on the proposal to develop emergency housing in Greenport. The $1.5 million renovation of the former Sunset Motel is currently underway and expected to be completed this month. The recently re-christened Galvan Motel is located at 3550 Route 9 in Greenport. On April 17, the Board of Supervisors Health and Human Services Committee moved a resolution to enter into an agreement with Galvan Civil Motels with an 8 to 1 vote. The lone dissenting vote was cast by Greenport Town Supervisor Kathy Leck Eldridge. “I am the only one who opposed the resolution because I do not think it is a good fit at that location,” Eldridge said. “There is still work to be done before Galvan can run a motel there in general. Before the town of Greenport issues a certificate of occupancy it will have to come before the planning board with a site plan change.” The agreement is intended to help the county Department of Social Services better handle its overflow of homeless shelter beds, said county Board of Supervisors Chairman Matthew Murell. “We have a shortage of beds,” Murell added. “This agreement will not solve the problem, but it will help with the overflow.” Galvan plans to charge $85 per person, per night. Thirty percent of that cost will be invested in services and in building and grounds security, according to the draft contract. Read the full story at HudsonValley360 [dot] com.
