Livingston church named to State and National Historic Registers

Sep 09, 2019 12:45 pm
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo September 6, announced the New York State Board for Historic Preservation has recommended the addition of 14 properties, resources and districts to the State and National Registers of Historic Places. And the Glenco Mills Methodist Chapel in Livingston was one of two properties nominated in the Capitol Region, and the only location named from Columbia and Greene counties. Erected in 1869, the chapel's construction was funded by Isaac Shaurman, a Livingston native who returned home following a successful career in New York City. Shaurman endowed the church to ensure that community members had a place of worship. Cuomo named Albany's Washington Avenue Corridor Historic District to the registers, as well. "These storied sites represent exceptional and fascinating pieces of New York's rich and diverse history," Cuomo said. "Adding these properties to the State and National Registers of Historic Places would ensure they have the funding they need so we can protect, preserve and promote them in all of their full glory for present and future generations of New Yorkers." According to a statement from Cuomo's office, the National Register includes more than 120,000 historic buildings, structures and sites statewide. Property owners, municipalities and organizations throughout New York sponsored the nominations. Read the full press release at governor [dot] ny [dot] gov.
