Coeymans clerks office faces cut

Jan 13, 2017 12:03 am
Melanie Lekocevic reports in the Ravena News-Herald that the Coeymans Town Board voted to eliminate a part-time position in the clerk's office, upsetting the current town clerk. A part time clerical employee left the clerk's office last year, but at the town's year-end organization meeting, Town Supervisor Philip Crandall and Town Councilpersons James Youmans and Tom Dolan voted to use the $12,000 salary for general funds, while Kenneth Burns and George Langdon voted to retain the position. Town Clerk Diane Millious was upset by the decision. “I asked four times to be included on the agenda at meetings,” she said. The extra help goes with extra responsibilities that other Albany County town clerks don't have, she said, but the supervisor disagreed. “Back in the 1980s there were only two people in the office, and they didn’t have computers. They had to do everything by hand,” Crandall said. “With computers, I don’t understand why we would need more people.” The Coeymans Town Council meets next Thursday, Jan. 12.
