Divide NY Caucus would split state in three

WXXI-FM News is reporting representatives from some locations in upstate and western New York are moving forward with a plan to divide the state into three separate regions. The Divide New York Caucus held its annual meeting in Rochester June 1 and 2, and discussed updates on two proposed state constitutional amendments that would be needed for the split to happen. John Bergener, chair of Divide New York Caucus, says there would be benefits for western and upstate New York if they operate as separate governments within one state. One proposal would divide the state into three regions — upstate, would become New Amsterdam; the New York Region, would consist of New York City; and, the Long Island and the Rockland-Westchester area would be renamed Montauk. Republican state Assemblymember David DiPietro from Erie County, a sponsor of one of the proposed amendments, said if the amendments are added to the state constitution, the state could be become three separate regions in about three years. Republican state Senator Joe Griffo, the acting minority leader in the state Senate, has made his own proposal. Under his plan, the principle of one-person-one-vote in the state Senate would be eliminated. Instead, political power would be apportioned based on geography.
