Legislature approves more oversight on public authorities

Apr 12, 2019 12:47 am
David Lombardo reports for Capitol Confidential that New York's legislature passed a measure this week that allows the state Authorities Budget Office to suspend a public authority’s board and executive officer if they’re more than three years late filing required reports. Reinvent Albany, a pro-transparency-in-government group, described the legislation as “an important step forward for transparency and accountability in local authority boards.” A Feb. 4 report from the Authorities Budget Office included The Catskill Local Development Corporation and The Schoharie Community Development Corporation as late filers. “Giving the ABO the authority to suspend board members responsible for violations will likely result in a higher compliance rate, allowing the public to better track the operations and effectiveness of local authorities,” Reinvent Albany said. Gov. Andrew Cuomo will have to sign the bill for it to become law. Read the full story at Capitol Confidential, a Times Union blog.
