Sarah Trafton reports for Columbia-Greene Media that first responders including state Department of Environmental Conservation rangers, the Cairo Fire Department, Cairo Police, Round Top Fire Department, Hensonville Fire Department, state police, and the Greene County Sheriff’s Office responded to a fire on Blackhead Mountain Sept. 27. “It was most likely due to an unattended campfire,” Ranger Rob Dawson said Sept. 30, noting an illegal campsite too close to the trail there. About 434 square feet of forest at 3,300 feet in elevation was burnt by the fire that took 20 hours to extinguish. Weather forecasters in Albany say rainfall for the area north of the Greene County mountain is about three-quarters of an inch below normal, while in Poughkeepsie it is three inches below normal for the past month. But forecasters are predicting lots of rain later this week. Read more about this story at HudsonValley360.com.
