Grand jury indicts Sheldon Silver

Matthew Hamilton is reporting at Capitol Confidential former Assembly speaker Sheldon Silver was indicted by a federal grand jury Thu., Feb. 19. On January 22, Silver was arrested and charged by federal authorities with with taking $4 million in bribes and kickbacks in exchange for pushing policy favorable to real estate developers and securing state grants for a New York City doctor’s research. The three-count indictment that was handed up Thursday accuses the Manhattan Democrat of committing one count each of honest services mail fraud, honest services wire fraud and extortion under color of official right. The indictment outlines what Silver must forfeit if he is convicted, including money in multiple bank and investment accounts; funds, assets, accounts or notes held by multiple LLCs and LPs and right, title and interest in a Sullivan County property and two Manhattan apartments.
