Greenport woman arrested for hate crime at synagogue
Jan 29, 2020 12:57 am
Amanda Purcell reports for Columbia-Greene Media that Tara Rios of Greenport was charged with a hate crime for allegedly throwing pork chops at a local synagogue Jan. 9. Rios is accused of throwing a package of pork chops onto the front steps of the Congregation Anshe Emeth in Greenport sometime between the hours of 5 p.m. and 3 a.m., and then allegedly returning to the synagogue at about 3:28 a.m. Jan 10 to photograph the hate crime. The FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force and State Police investigated the incident. “These acts caused the membership of Congregation Anshe Emeth to be in reasonable fear of further anti-Semitic acts which could result in physical injury,” State Police said. Rios refused to comment, and Rabbi Daniel Fried from the synagogue could not be reached for comment. “Anti-semitism and xenophobia in any form are reprehensible,” Council on American-Islamic Relations Litigation Director Ahmed Mohamed said in a statement. “We continue to stand in solidarity with the Jewish community. Acts of hatred and harassment at houses of worship are unacceptable. As we have stated many times, an attack on any house of worship is an attack on all houses of worship.” Read more about this story at HudsonValley360.com.
