Overlooked: One Hundred Years of Musician-Led Jazz Record Labels (Audio)
After the local news at noon, host Rob Saffer and guest Marc Epstein will explore the first 100 years of musician-led jazz record labels. The (roughly) chronological review spans recordings from Fletcher Henderson’s Black Swan label (1922) to Gordon Grdina’s AttaBoyGirl recording label (2022). During the years in between, there was swing on the Mercer label; bop on Debut and Dee Gee; spiritual jazz on the Mary, YAL, and Meta labels; Afrofuturism on Saturn and Zulu; free jazz on Strata East, Improvising Artists and Centering recording labels; and a whole lot more.
