Brian Hubert reports in The Daily Mail the Cairo-Durham school district Board of Education adopted its 2013-14 spending plan totaling $27.8 million. The plan requires a 4.23 percent tax levy increase. Reduced state funding for school districts continues to concern District Superintendent Mary Fassett. She said, “I know New York State needs to cut money, but not on the backs of school districts. That’s not going to make New York competitive in global markets.” If the proposed budget is rejected, the board could put up the original budget for a second vote, submit a revised budget or adopt a contingency budget. Cairo-Durham Teachers Association President Justin Karker also called on the state to provide more school funding. “With more state funding, we could offer rich programs, instead of minimal programs on a shoestring budget,” he said.
