Local newspapers win awards

The Columbia Paper, The Daily Mail, and the Register Star all took home some editorial awards at the 2016 New York Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest April 7-8 in Saratoga. Kate Seckinger at Columbia-Greene Media reports that he Register-Star received a second-place award for a six-part series on cold cases in Greene and Columbia counties published last June and July. The Daily Mail took a third-place award for a five-part series on adoption in Greene and Columbia counties from last August. The Columbia Paper won the first place award for Editorials in Division 1 for opinions about the contempt of court charges against polluter Sal Cascino in Copake, the impact on Columbia County of unequal state funding for public defenders, and the Chatham Town Board's decision to pay for more road patrols by the county Sheriff’s Office during a town budget deficit. Contributing photographer B. Docktor won a Second Place award in the Feature Photo category for her Page 1 photo in The Columbia Paper of a father and son at the Ancram pool. Docktor also won an honorable mention in the Sports Action Photos category. And The Columbia Paper's Associate Editor Diane Valden got an Honorable Mention for her front page story last September about Heather Kromer and her pet chicken.
