Storm preparedness update

Oct 27, 2012 7:59 pm
The Watershed Post has established a Hurricane Sandy page as a clearinghouse of information released by officials in various locales west of the Hudson River.

Portions of a statement released Fri., Oct. 26 by the Schoharie County Board of Supervisors:
[...] The Gilboa Dam is being monitored to ensure the safety and security of all Schoharie County residents....The Gilboa Dam will be a top priority throughout this weather event and updates will be given on a regular basis.

An informational phone number is activated. Residents can 211 to receive the most recent updates on weather conditions and emergency announcements. 2-1-1 is the number to dial for information pertaining to shelters, evacuation routes, road closures, recovery services, power outages, donations, volunteer opportunities, and other disaster-related services. Residents should NOT be contacting 911 for this information.  That number should ONLY be used if an emergency has occurred.

In Delaware County, the Town of Middletown will be posting emergency updates to its Web site, and if a state of emergency is declared, recorded information will be available on a new emergency phone line.

From a press release issued by the town of Middletown on Friday, Oct. 26:
The Town of Middletown has a section on its website and a dedicated hotline providing resident information in the event of an emergency.

The emergency link on the Town’s website is: http://middletowndelawarecountyny.org/index.php/emergency/

The emergency phone number is 845-586-1115; this phone will be operational only after an emergency declaration has been made; a Facebook page has also been created (Middletown Delaware County).

Middleburgh mayor Matthew Avitabile posted on the village's news blog, Friday:
The Village is preparing vital information to be released door to door. This will include where to go, evac urgency, routes, safety precautions, emergency contact, and others based on what we learned from running the response last time. If you would like to help distribute, let me know.

We will keep the Village Office open on Tuesday after normal hours, possibly 24 hours as the municipal response center. We will have volunteers, food, and information ready for anyone that needs it. The Elementary School will be open as a shelter. We will monitor and try to open others as we get closer.

For quick updates, you may call or text (prefer text in case I'm in a meeting) me at 518-763-6854. I will try to keep this page updated as much as possible.

The Town of Olive is distributing leaflets this weekend advising residents:
Severe Flooding may occur and the Town does not have the manpower to go door to door to check on each home. You are urged to evacuate early if conditions are warranted.

Check the Olive website: town.olive.ny.us, radio and YNN often for updates.

The Town of Shandaken is advising residents in need of help to go to the closest of the town's five firehouses. If an emergency situation develops, plans are being made to open both the Belleayre Ski Center and Phoenicia Elementary School as shelters.
