Cuomo to make attacking a working journalist a felony

Ken Lovett is reporting in the Daily News under a proposal unveiled by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo as part of his state budget plan Jan. 15, attacking a working journalist in New York would be a felony. The state added similar protections in the past for MTA and sanitation workers. “The freedom of the press is a constitutionally guaranteed right and a pillar of our democracy,” Cuomo said. The governor blamed the Trump administration for launching “an attack on the press, labeling journalism it does not like as ‘fake news’ to advance the administration’s own agenda and inspire hatred of the media among the public.” He cited various recent examples, including a congressional candidate in 2017 who assaulted a reporter and the mailing of 14 pipe bombs to media outlets and political figures last year.
