Ulster official discusses burning waste

Oct 03, 2018 12:15 am
William J. Kemble reports in the Daily Freeman that Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency board member Jack Hayes suggested the county burn solid waste to generate electricity. “I’m just wondering if maybe we should be thinking in terms of a multifaceted situation in regard to reduction of solid waste,” he said, and also mentioned the nuclear power plant in Westchester County. “Considering that Indian Point is going to go offline in the very near future, there’s obviously a big hole for energy.... There’ll be a deficiency in production, and something like this would make it up.” Ulster County officials expect that the Seneca Meadows landfill in central New York, where the majority of the county’s trash is taken, will close in less than ten years.
