NY Attorney General says state police should be using body cams

May 31, 2019 2:00 pm
Diane Pineiro-Zucker is reporting for The Daily Freeman Attorney General Letitia James May 31, recommended the New York State Police begin a body-worn camera program. The recommendation came in a report from James clearing two state troopers and a sheriff's deputy of responsibility in the 2018 death of a handcuffed man. James' report was issued eight days after a state trooper fatally shot an unarmed Greene County man on Interstate 84 in Orange County. That case is currently under investigation by James and her office, but was not mentioned in the report. According to the report, “the [Office of the Attorney General] takes this opportunity to recommend that the NYSP seek the necessary funding to implement a body-worn camera program. ...[O]f the 20 largest law-enforcement agencies in this country, the NYSP bears the distinction of being the only agency not outfitting its members with body-worn cameras or piloting a plan to do so.” James said that as recently as October 2018, New York State Police officials said they had no plans to implement such a program, citing its “prohibitive cost.” Since 2015 the attorney general is required to investigate all deaths of unarmed civilians involving law enforcement in New York.
