The Register Star is reporting the Home Energy Assistance Program Regular Benefit season this year will be one of the shortest on record. Unless additional funds are made available, the regular benefit season will end Dec. 31. HEAP provides limited financial assistance with home heating costs to income eligible households. The regular HEAP benefit amount ranges from $21 to $625 per year depending on living arrangements and type of energy used for heat. The emergency benefit season will begin on Jan. 2. This benefit offers one time, limited assistance to individuals and families with a heating or utility emergency such as a shut off notice or very little fuel oil. Columbia Opportunities, located at 540 Columbia St. in Hudson, is still accepting applications from Columbia County residents for the federally funded program.
