Sen. Gillibrand optimistic on farm bill

May 09, 2013 12:15 am
Brian Tumulty reported in the Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is predicting New York farmers will like the changes contained in a five-year farm bill Congress could approve later this year. The Senate approved a new farm bill a year ago, but it was never signed. Gillibrand is a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee. The committee will begin drafting the new legislation next week. Gillibrand predicts the bill will pass the Senate this year with many of the same New-York-friendly provisions she inserted into last year's failed legislation. State farm groups support the expected creation of a new income insurance program for dairy farmers, revisions to the crop insurance program to accommodate specialty crop growers, expanding broadband infrastructure in rural areas and increasing the population cutoff for communities to qualify for federal rural aid programs.
