Ulster County ending mixed recycling

Jun 28, 2018 11:33 am
William J. Kemble reports in The Daily Freeman that in Ulster County it will soon be much more difficult to recycle. The Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency stops accepting single-stream recycling on Jan. 1, 2019, and the town of Ulster won't accept single-stream recycling at its transfer station beginning Aug. 1. Single-stream means mixed, or commingled, recycling, and eventually the paper, cardboard, glass, metal, and plastic needs to be sorted. But when it is mixed, the paper often gets contaminated, costing the recycler money. And recyclers are paying less for materials, with the Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency claiming it lost almost $50,000 on its recycling efforts in the first five months of 2018. But Kingston Mayor Steve Noble is not buying this argument, alleging the board had “created a crisis and made this seem like a crisis, making it seem that our agency is stockpiling single-stream recycling, making it seem that we have no place to put it, making it that there is an emergency happening in Ulster County, and it’s just not true.” Read the full story in The Daily Freeman.
