Artists to purchase closed Tivoli church

Oct 25, 2019 2:30 pm
William J. Kemble is reporting for the Daily Freeman artists Brice and Helen Marden are looking into purchasing the St. Sylvia Roman Catholic Church building in the village of Tivoli and turning it into a community space and arts center, according to Red Hook Town Supervisor Robert McKeon. McKeon said at a town board meeting this week the town will withdraw its offer to buy the building if the Mardens can reach a purchase agreement with the Archdiocese of New York. “We would withdraw our offer ... since the Mardens’ intentions are to preserve, protect and make available to the public this historic property for generations to come,” McKeon said. McKeon said the Mardens have a track record of restoring community buildings, including the Hotel Tivoli and its accompanying restaurant, and have helped in the effort to maintain the village's character. The St. Sylvia property consists of three parcels totaling to 2.76 acres located on Broadway in Tivoli. The property was put on the market for $500,000 in early 2019. The building dates to the turn of the 20th century and was used for worship services until 2015. Read the full story in the Daily Freeman.
